The Second Month of 2026: Softening into Flow

If January asked us to settle, February begins to invite movement - not the kind that pushes forward, but the kind that responds.
The water element shapes this month of practice. Not as something to master or direct, but as something to listen to. Water doesn’t force change. It adapts, yields, and finds its way through what already exists. After the stillness and weight of earth, February offers a gentle thaw - a softening of edges, a return to sensation, and a renewed relationship with feeling.

It’s a simple teaching, but a profound one. When effort tightens and willpower stalls, water offers another way. Not through pushing, but through allowing movement to happen where it can.
In classes, this may look like more fluid transitions, gentle waves through the spine, and practices that move between effort and ease rather than holding one or the other. There will still be pauses, stillness, and rest — but now they are woven through motion. Shapes may feel less fixed, more responsive. The invitation is not to do more, but to notice how movement wants to arise when we stop controlling it quite so tightly.
Water teaches through responsiveness. Through listening. Through allowing things to change shape. Rather than repetition for stability, we explore repetition for continuity — the way a familiar movement can feel different each time when we pay attention to sensation rather than form.

This naturally draws our awareness to the sacral chakra, Svādhiṣṭhāna — the centre of feeling, creativity, and relational flow. Rather than approaching it as something to awaken or energise, we’ll treat it as a place to be met with care. How does the body experience pleasure, ease, or subtle enjoyment? Where does resistance arise when we’re asked to soften or feel more fully? Through smooth, rhythmic movement, supported hip work, and breath that encourages spaciousness rather than control, we’ll create conditions for this centre to be gently supported.
As with all elements, water has its shadow. Overwhelm. Emotional flooding. A sense of losing boundaries. So the teaching will continue to emphasise containment alongside flow - reminding the body that it’s safe to feel without being swept away. Grounding shapes, pauses, and moments of stillness will act as riverbanks, giving form to the movement rather than limiting it.
February is not about forcing openness or expression. It’s about allowing movement where there has been holding. Letting sensation return without pressure. Trusting that when the body feels supported, it knows how to flow.
If we feel stuck, in the body, in the breath, in life, this month gently reminds us that there is another option. To soften. To yield. To let ourselves be carried, rather than pushed.
